TIME Space Pioneer - December 8th, 1952

“Artist Boris Artzybasheff was a master at drawing incredible personalities out of seemingly ordinary objects which is evident in his imaginative space covers. Decades before man landed on the moon, he captured that human spirit way beyond the confines of Earth.” – D.W. Pine, Creative Director of TIME For the Dec. 8, 1952 cover, which asked the question “will man outgrow the Earth?” Artzybasheff imagined a larger-than-life “space pioneer” landing on a distant planet. It marked the first appearance of a space robot on TIME’s cover and prompted the editors to write: “leaving the earth to its own complex and confused devices, [this] cover takes you out of this world to the mysterious and challenging realms of outer space.”
